We all have paths that are easy to follow in life (and I don’t mean that in a bad way.) My family has a strong presence in the business world, so it is an easy path to follow. Yours might have a strong presence in the medical world, so that becomes an easy path to follow.
I think this is why mentors are so important. They are people that have walked the path before and can help guide you along the way. They make life a lot easier, because they pull from their experience and educate you, and you can avoid the same mistakes they did.
Without a mentor, blazing a new path becomes overwhelming. Blazing a new path — something different than what our close family/friends have done — is phenomenal by itself. We don’t need to make it harder by walking it alone.
