This whole collapse is karmic payback from 2004. But you know what? I’ll take it.
Yeah, this was supposed to be the “Greatest Red Sox Team Ever”. Clearly wrong, but we all should have known that from the start — the 2004 Red Sox actually were the Greatest Red Sox Team Ever. That ragtag bunch had heart (and hair), character(s), left everything on the field, and dispelled the myth of an 86 year curse.
Would I have liked to see the 2011 Red Sox do better? Yes.
But you know what… If a ghost of futures yet past had come to me anytime pre-October in 2004 and offered me this deal, I’d take it in a heartbeat:
- First benefit: The Red Sox would come back from an 0-3 ALCS deficit to beat the Yankees, and sweep the World Series
- Second benefit: Three years later, the Red Sox would come back from a 1-3 ALCS deficit to beat the Indians, and sweep the World Series
- The payment: One of the worst September Collapses of all time eight years later, preventing playoff baseball in that season
Think about that. Any Red Sox fan would have taken that in a heartbeat. Epically missing the playoffs in 2011 in exchange for TWO WORLD SERIES?
Yes, this sucks. Yes, there are a lot of “could’ves” and maybe even “should’ves”. Yes, the Sox Season is done. But perspective helps.
Thank you 2004 and 2007 Red Sox.
